KaiOS launched in January in India and has surged ahead of iOS by 15% market share while iOS dropped to 9.6%. This breakthrough happened when Reliance Industries launched LYF and Jio smartphones powered by KaiOS. This linux-based OS offers a blend of smartphone-like functionalities in feature phones. KaiOS phones avail VOLTE services, streaming, gaming and recently Whatsapp was also added on Jio Phones.

Brands like Lava, Micromax, Intex, Nokia, Samsung also rolled out 3G/4G enabled feature phones but none were powered by KaiOS. These phones were sold at rates between Rs 1500- 3500. Reliance Jio disrupted the market with its Rs 501 JioPhone running KaiOS. JioPhones have 80 per cent market share in sub-Rs 1500 mobile phone segment. Out of every 10 phones sold in the sub-Rs 1,500 price-range, 8 are JioPhones.

In its outset, KaiOS powered Alcatel GoFlip in North America; since then it has given life to more than 40 million devices from five partners. In North America, Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T are carriers that supported the OS and brought it to life. Nokia's Banana Phone is run by KaiOS, the iconic slider phone is present in over 45 countries.
